Philadelphia Is Right Across the River

The Delaware River separates New Jersey from its western neighbor, Pennsylvania. But Mount Laurel and Philadelphia are under an hour away from each other (depending on traffic). That means your family is close to some amazing museums, shopping, cultural events, and entertainment without having to travel the two-or-so hours north to Manhattan. 

With a short drive across the river, you can get an original Philly cheesesteak sandwich from one of the many that claim to be the first restaurant to serve them. The New Jersey Turnpike runs right along the northwestern part of Mount Laurel, so you can easily hop on and travel practically anywhere in the state in very little time.
