For anyone who loves being by the water, observing birds in their natural habit, or casting a line to catch some fish, Jones Bridge State Park is an ideal location to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with nature. Sitting along the Chattahoochee River, this park offers a gorgeous view that will take your breath away. 

Even if you have really small children and just want to enjoy a quick meal in nature, there are several picnic pavilions that are ideal for sitting and talking while enjoying an afternoon lunch. The calming sound of the river soothes the mind, and the trees that surround you create an enclosure that is comforting. Those interested in hiking in the great outdoors will appreciate the winding trail along the riverbanks. At just under five miles, it is a moderate hike that leads you through the grounds and even to a small and serene lake.

Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center

The Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center is a must-see destination that is altogether educational, fun, and relaxing. At just 10 minutes from Peachtree Corners, this historic site is a convenient way to get away from the city without having to venture out too far. 

The Visitor Center and Farm Museum offer a wealth of knowledge for people looking to learn a little about the history of the area. To explore the location, head over to the boardwalk for a two-mile hike. It offers a safe and clear path for visitors with highlights like the wetlands and Sal’s Creek. There are also over three miles of trails to get you moving and exploring. Take advantage and observe the wildlife and take a few pictures of your favorite foliage. 

If you’re looking into something a little more interactive, the preserve hosts several activities. Some opportunities include goat walking classes, a cooking and crafts program, home-school adventures, and Feeding Fridays, where participants get a hands-on opportunity to feed snakes, turtles, frogs, rabbits, and ducks.

Southeastern Railway Museum

The Southeastern Railway Museum serves as Georgia’s official Transportation History Museum and is a can’t-miss for any future railway conductor or aspiring locomotive engineer. It was founded in 1970 and displays over 100 artifacts and engineering memorabilia. Because it has evolved into a transportation museum, it also houses a collection of vehicles from other monumental transportation types and eras. You can even take a ride on the museum’s caboose. 

General admission begins at $18 for adults and $12 for children. There is a senior citizen discount. General admission includes one ride on the train.  The museum is also a great venue for birthday parties and special events.

Lake Lanier 

At Lake Lanier, there is a little something for everyone. If you like to be close to the water but still in earshot of civilization, this is the place for you. With several different campgrounds open year-round, you can have the camping experience of your life any time of year. They also offer several accommodations and cabins, so you can stay in comfort but still enjoy the outdoors. Cabins range in price from budget-friendly to luxury. 

The shorelines are enough reason to visit, but you also have several different ways to enjoy the water, including boat trips and kayak adventures.

Stone Mountain Park

With 3200 acres of natural land, Stone Mountain Park is a family-friendly place that offers a multitude of recreational activities and versatile lodging options. Park attractions include the Summit Skyride. This cable car transports passengers over 825 feet above ground to the top of Stone Mountain. The area also boasts a five-mile hiking trail around the base of the mountain and a one-mile trail at the summit. Picnic areas are also available on a first-come, first-served basis.
