Greenville Farm Family Campground

If you’re looking for a campground that’s not too far from home but has lots of open space to roam, then you should take a quick trip to Greenville Farm Family Campground. This spot, located just over 30 minutes away in nearby Haymarket, is a 200-acre working farm that hosts families from all over to pick a spot and camp for a few nights. 

This spot has campsites that are close to the woods if you want the rugged backdrop or other sites that are out on the open land. You can also bring campers or tents, make use of the bathhouses and restrooms, and buy supplies and souvenirs at the camp shop.

The kids will love walking around the farm, watching the plows and other farming machines at work, meeting the farm animals, and burning some energy at the on-site playground, pool, and kiddie pool. If you’ve got some anglers in the family, they’ll love fishing in any of the four small ponds that are stocked with bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. And you can still fish even if you don’t have a state fishing license. Plus, this campground is within a short drive from some great local sites, including Manassas Battlefield and the town’s historical center, Arlington Cemetery, and Washington, D.C.

Burke Lake Park

Burke Lake Park is a great camping destination for families who love to be out on the water. This park’s campground features family campsites for up to six people and two tents or group campsites for up to 18 people. While there aren’t any water or electric hookups, you get access to other amenities, like a grill, fire ring, and picnic table at each site and bathhouses with sinks, showers, and flushing toilets. There’s also wilderness camping for families or groups who want to rough it even more in the backwoods with no access to amenities.

But don’t spend too much time at your campsite, or else you’d miss out on the fun experiences Burke Lake Park has to offer. This 888-acre park features the namesake Burke Lake, which is a wonderful Northern Virginia waterway that offers fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. You’ve got beautiful stretches of wooded and open trails for the perfect hike. Your family can also enjoy playing disc golf, going putt-putt, riding the miniature train, taking a bike ride, or spending time at one of the park’s special events, like nighttime kayak trips and campfire parties.

Greenbrier State Park

If you need a beach staycation, then Greenbrier State Park, across the state line in Maryland, is the place for you and your family. Get the best of both worlds with the Appalachian Mountains in the distance and the sandy beaches of Greenbrier Lake, both of which provide the perfect background for camping. 

Here you can pitch a tent, park your RV, or rent a tent cabin if you didn’t bring shelter of your own. Both tent and RV campers get access to electricity hookups, showers and toilets, picnic tables, and a fire pit at your site, but only RV campers get water hookups. And this park and campground are pet-friendly, so bring your whole family along.

On the lake, you can take out your kayaks, canoes, or standup paddleboards or rent from the park. You can go fishing for trout, bass, and bluegill, but make sure your Maryland fishing license is up to date. Any hunters in the family? If so, they can get their Maryland hunting license and head to the 500-acre hunting area. And if your family loves to hike, you have access to over 11 miles of gorgeous natural trails to explore. This awesome local camping spot is located at 21843 National Pike in nearby Boonsboro, Maryland.

Shenandoah River State Park

Shenandoah River State Park is well worth the 1.25-hour drive. This amazing camping area is open year-round and offers tent-only camping, electrical-hookup camping sites, yurt and cabin rentals, a lodge, and plenty of RV camping. When you stay in a cabin, enjoy amenities like a fully stocked kitchen, a deck, indoor fireplace, and bedrooms and bathrooms. The lodge rooms also have kitchens, multiple bathrooms and bedrooms, and a fireplace, and you also enjoy queen- and double-sized beds, a washer and dryer, and multiple decks for lounging. Tents and RVs get access to bathroom facilities, fire rings, picnic tables, and more.

At Shenandoah River State Park, you’ll never be bored. You can hike or bike the 24 miles of natural trails, float around the river, go fishing, or take a horseback ride. Plus, you can attend the fun and educational natural events hosted at this park. You and the kids can learn about local wildlife and how to track them, meet some of the park’s inhabitants, and practice your fishing skills to catch the different species that call the local waters home.
