The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is a major attraction in Las Vegas. The center opened in 2012, and brought with it a developing community of artists and performers who enhance the Las Vegas culture. Introducing the best of music, theater, and dance to the Las Vegas community, the center is a cultural foundation that connects the community.

The Smith Center is the first of its size to earn a gold-level certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. For a building that sits on a 4.75-acre plot of land, the feat is amazing and a testament to the skill and innovation of the design team. The location is host to an average of 400 performances annually and offers an outreach program that benefits of 70,000 local students per year.

Known as the “Heart of the Arts” in Nevada, the Smith Center is approaching its tenth year anniversary, and remains dedicated to supporting the performing arts in Souther Nevada and attracting some of the world’s greatest performers to benefit the community. Visitors at the center love to stroll through Symphony Park, view the featured art installations and marvel at the original pieces on display.

A major attraction to the outdoor courtyard is “Pipe Dream,” the commissioned and colorful art piece (pictured above) by internationally renowned artist, Tim Bavington. The piece is a representation of the center’s mission to be an all-inclusive safe space for community members. Another point of interest at The Smith Center is the sculpture “Genesis in Flight.” Placed at the center of the grand lobby in Reynolds Hall, the winged-sculpture draws inspiration from the Hoover Dam, like the rest of The Smith Center.

Whether you visit the center for the art, to see a performance, or for classes, the welcoming atmosphere is remarkable. You’ll find the center at 361 Symphony Park Avenue, in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. Check the website for an updated schedule of events, including broadway performances and prices. Outdoor Recreational Opportunities

Las Vegas is known for its glitz, glamour, and bright lights of the strip. But one major perk of the city is the numerous outdoor recreational opportunities. Whether you want to camp, hike, mountain bike, or have a picnic in the park, Las Vegas has many options. A favorite destination of Las Vegas locals is Red Rock Canyon. It features a one-way 13-mile scenic drive, if you don’t want to brave the Vegas heat. For the adventurous ones, there are 26 numbered hikes and trails to challenge your abilities and help you reconnect with the outdoors.

Aspiring horticulturists and zoologists will be excited to see the many plants and wildlife that call Red Rock Canyon home. The location is just far enough from the city lights that camping here will show you an awe-inspiring display of the night sky. Onsite you’ll also find indoor and outdoor exhibits to enhance your overall experience. For information regarding park fees and regulations, call 702-515-5350.

Another outdoor destination to consider taking the family to is the Valley of Fire State Park. This location features a large variety of scenery, red rock formations including arches, petroglyphs, and slot canyons.

Take at least a day to explore the formations. Some you don’t want to miss are the elephant rock, the Beehives, and the Atlatl Rock. Hiking trails at The Valley of Fire are fairly moderate and easy, so its a great place to explore with little ones and help them get out extra energy. Take lots of water, and sunblock. The Valley of Fire also offers guided hiking tours based on your level of experience.

The Valley of Fire State Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. An entrance fee of $10 to $15 per vehicle is charged. For more information, call 702-397-2088.

Cultural Attractions

Fun cultural attractions are also an advantage of living in fabulous Las Vegas. The Neon Museum, which is home to many retired neon signs from famous hotels and casinos on the strip, is a favorite of visitors and locals. While there, be sure to get tickets to tour the Neon Boneyard, the museum’s main collection. The Main Boneyard is located outside, and features more than 200 unrestored signs that are lit at sunset using ground lighting.

The Downtown Container Park is another must-see destination. The visually stimulating area is a great place to take some family photos, or a social media profile picture. It is an open-air shopping center that features live entertainment and is an exceptional example of the lively and diverse Las Vegas culture. Make your trip there economical and grab the kids some hotdogs and drinks as you window shop and people watch. The Downtown Contain Park is at 707 Freemont Street, the old Strip.
