Bunten Road Park is a well-maintained, 45-acre community green space near the M.H. Mason Elementary School in Duluth. It offers loads of amenities for active families, including baseball and soccer fields with concessions, four tennis courts, playgrounds, walking paths, and a 36,000-square-foot recreation center with an indoor gym and aerobics rooms.

Several scenic trails wind through the park, like the 10-foot-wide asphalt path. This paved trail passes through a wooded park section and the sports fields. In addition, a half-mile unpaved route provides a more remote experience for you and the kids, yet it’s easy enough for the little ones to toddle along. If you’re lucky, you’ll see birds and other critters that call Bunten Road Park home. Leashed dogs are welcome at this park.

McDaniel Farm Park

We love a day on the farm, and there’s no better place to go near Sugarloaf than the 134-acre McDaniel Farm Park. This former 1930s cotton farm is a wonderful place to play while exploring local history. Discover original structures, like the furnished farmhouse, barn, well house, blacksmith shed, and chicken coop. There’s also a remodeled tenant farmer’s house, a carriage house, and a vegetable and flower garden.

Bring a picnic lunch or use the park’s grills for cooking a family meal, then follow the 3 miles of wooded walking trails along creeks and over the grassy hills. Farm tours are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. There’s even a dog park so your four-legged friend can come along for the ride.

Abbotts Bridge Recreation Area

One of our favorite ways to revel in our local park system is afloat. That’s why we recommend visiting the Abbotts Bridge Unit of the Chattahoochee River for fun recreational activities from fishing to boating. This spot is close to Sugarloaf and offers a pavilion with picnic tables, charcoal grills, and a nearby restroom.

Launch your watercraft from the boat ramp and see if you can catch some trout for dinner. The river is usually calm and flat, making it ideal for a leisurely float aboard a tube. If you don’t have one, you can rent one for a fee from Chattahoochee River Tubing on 4349 Abbotts Bridge Road. This locally owned company offers seasonal tube rentals and shuttle service to Abbotts Bridge.

Jones Bridge Park

For additional water excursions the family will love, we suggest stopping by Jones Bridge Park. This inviting area provides access to the Chattahoochee River. Launch your kayak or canoe in the water for a family paddle. Find a shady patch near the bank and set up a picnic, or drop your fishing line and angle for some fish. Visitors are welcome to photograph the ducks and geese from the river overlook.

This tranquil 30-acre retreat has a lot to offer. There are modern restrooms, covered pavilions with grills, three soccer fields, a community center, and a sand volleyball court. It’s one of the best places near Sugarloaf to hike. The hiking trail winds through nearly 5 miles of the picturesque riverside forest up to the site where Jones bridge once spanned the water.

Alexander Park

If your family is into disc golf, you must visit Alexander Park. Its 18-hole course is well-marked and provides numerous obstacles. You and the kids will love playing through the wooded area and hills and challenging each other with the distance changes. You can download a course map and scorecard from the park’s website to maximize your experience.

This 91-acre park also features a lake with a fishing pier, a horseshoe pit, a playground, an outdoor classroom, restrooms, and pavilions outfitted with grills. Your family can also walk down the park’s paths. There’s a 1.4-mile paved trail that’s ideal for strollers and wheelchairs, while the 1-mile dirt route gets your family a little closer to nature. There’s also a dog park on the grounds with its own entrance.

Mountain Park Park is in a league of its own. This 44-acre outdoor recreational space features a fantastic skate complex. So grab your kids’ helmets, knee pads, and skateboards and go for a spin. This premium setup has features to challenge every skill level. It gives children and adults a place to practice their skills, from ollies to kickflips. This park also offers amenities like six tennis courts with lights, sand volleyball, a rock climbing wall, and a playground.

Feel free to bring a picnic lunch, like hot dogs and burgers. There are grills and pavilions for your family’s comfort and convenience. If you forget the cooler, you may be in luck. There’s a seasonal concession stand where you can buy drinks and snacks. After filling up on delicious eats, take a stroll on one of the park’s trails, like the 1-mile paved path or the non-paved nature trail, fun for infants in strollers and toddlers alike.
